Depending on your degree program (see your Graduate Guide or Graduate Division Program Requirements for specific requirements), foreign language may or may not be required.

The language requirement (if needed) can be satisfied in a few ways, including:

  • a placement exam (with UCLA language department)
  • School of Music departmental language exam, administered by Assistant Director in fall and spring quarters
  • coursework, or
  • demonstration of previously acquired language skills through documentation or an examination

Once the requirement has been satisfied, students need to submit a language petition to Graduate Division. This form requires departmental approval.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC DEPARTMENTAL LANGUAGE EXAM ADMINISTRATION

The Associate Director of the Office of Student Services & Enrollment Management will administer two examination opportunities for all graduate programs: one in the Fall (week 8) and one in the Spring (week 5). More information about exam details, dates, times, and languages offered is forthcoming. In the meantime, if you have questions, please contact Brenda Galvez at brenda.galvez@schoolofmusic.ucla.edu.
