How to Apply

Students interested in adding the Music Industry minor must complete an application process including an essay component, degree planner, and undergraduate program change petition.

Applications are only accepted in Fall and Spring quarters, and are due by Friday of Week 4 to Emily Spitz in 1642 Schoenberg Music Building.

Minimum Eligibility

I. Residency

  • If you entered UCLA as a freshman, the earliest you may apply to the minor is Fall of your sophomore year.
  • If you entered UCLA as a transfer, the earliest you may apply to the minor is Spring of your first year at UCLA.

II. Academic Standing

  • Students must be in good academic standing with at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

The Application Process

I. Complete the only prerequisite: a music ensemble course in the Herb Alpert School of Music.

Prior to the time of application, students who are not currently pursuing a major in the Herb Alpert School of Music must complete or currently be enrolled in one lower division music performance or music ensemble course (Ethnomusicology 91A–91Z, Music C90A–90N, C90Q–M90T or equivalent). The performance requirement may also be fulfilled through successful completion of Music Industry 111.

II. Attend an Info Session.

Students who would like to apply to the minor must attend an Info Session in the term in which they plan to apply. We do not currently provide digital copies of the application; they are handed out in physical form at the Info Sessions. Confirmed RSVPs are required, and attendance is taken at each session by way of a sign-in sheet.

III. Complete the application.

Applications are due by Friday of Week 4 in the term in which you are applying. They must be turned in to Emily Spitz at 1642 Schoenberg Music Building. There are no exceptions for late applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I please get a PTE number?
    • The Office of Student Services & Enrollment Management does not provide PTE numbers to students, as faculty members manage their course enrollments. Please contact the instructor of the course to request a PTE number.
  • Is Music Theory a prerequisite?
    • No. You do not need to complete the music theory requirement prior to applying. The only prerequisite is the music ensemble course.
  • Do I have to attend an Info Session if I’ve already attended in the past?
    • Yes. You must attend the Info Session in the quarter in which you apply. This is because things can change, and we want you to have the most up-to-date information so that your application is the best it can be.
  • Do I have to complete the prerequisite before applying?
    • Yes, you must complete the music ensemble prerequisite prior to applying. It is also acceptable if you are currently enrolled in the music ensemble in the term in which you apply.
  • Can I apply in Winter or Summer?
    • No, we only accept applications in Fall and Spring.
  • What can I do to be competitive for the minor?
    • It is advised that you complete 1–2 Music Industry courses in addition to the prerequisite before applying. This is because the minor is very competitive, and students who have completed more courses have shown that they are committed to completing the minor.
  • Can I turn in my application late (after Friday of Week 4)?
    • No, unfortunately applications cannot be accepted after the deadline.
  • Can I take Music Industry 101 if I have not yet been accepted to the minor?
    • Unfortunately you must wait until you are accepted to the minor to take Music Industry 101; the restrictions do not lift for non-minors.
  • How do I enroll in Music Industry 195 (Community or Corporate Internships in Music Industry and Technology)?
    • Enrollment in Music Industry 195 is restricted to juniors or seniors who have been accepted to the Music Industry minor. Please email Music Industry advisor Emily Spitz at espitz@schoolofmusic.ucla.edu for more information.
